Summerhighlights around the Ötscher
The Ötscher-Tormäuer Natural Park
In 1970, the area surrounding Mt. Ötscher was designated as the Ötscher-Tormäuer Natural Park. It is Lower Austria´s largest Natural Park, and for many also its most impressive: a sanctuary of peace and quiet for nature-lovers and hikers with a wealth of hidden beauty spots waiting to be discovered. One of the most extraordinary features are the deep ravines, notably the Ötscher Gorges, which are sometimes called the "Grand Canyon of Austria".
Mysterious cave: the Ötscher Show Cave
The Ötscher Show Cave (Ötscher Tropfsteinhöhle) between Gaming and Lackenhof with its stalagmites, stalactites and underground lake are accessible to visitors on guided tours:
1.05. to 26.10. every saturday, sunday and public holiday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm
Mountainbiking
The alpine region of the Mostviertel is paradise for mountainbikers, with 68 routes to explore ranging in difficulty from mild to wild. Together they cover a total distance of 1.350 km and a total elevation of 26.000 metres. Two challenging sections of the Alpentour Austria route now also pass through the Mostviertel.
The Ötscherland Express
One narrow-gauge railway wend their way through the alpine region of the Mostviertel:
The Ötscherland Express operates every weekend (except in winter) from Kienberg-Gaming to Göstling, drawn by a steam locomotive and crossing two trestlework bridges of the kind familiar to us from Westerns.
